Designing A Sustainable House

by Danny Forster on Apr 8, 2010

When it comes to designing a house, this means not coming in at the end with some extra insulation, but starting at the beginning with some basic questions. Questions about the sun and the wind, about when and how the building will be used, about the climate and the soil. Every element of design—orientation on the site, materials used, number of rooms, height, windows, everything—is considered as the architect figures out simply how to make a building work best. The most sustainable building is the one that works better than any other: that uses energy the most efficiently, that costs the least to build and to run, that interacts with its site intelligently, that makes the people inside it (and their neighbors) happy.
