As a die-hard Sopranos loyalist, I was, at first, reluctant to come to terms with the reality that The Wire is the single greatest television series in the history of the medium. But I had to. I watched all five seasons back-to-back on DVD while shooting the fourth season of Build It Bigger. The long flights to Singapore, Kuwait, and Abu Dhabi, combined with those countries’ lackluster cable TV offerings, gave me ample time to work through this complex, layered, heartbreaking, gorgeously acted, meandering love/hate letter to the city of Baltimore. It’s hard to explain to non-Wire inductees just how depressed I got as I worked through Season 5 knowing that with each subsequent DVD I put into my laptop I was that much closer to the end. Sometimes I wish I could have that brain wiping device that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones had in Men In Black for the sole purpose of erasing my memory of having seen The Wire. Then I could watch it again for the first time.
Check out the series homepage on HBO.com: http://www.hbo.com/the-wire/index.html You can buy DVDs of the complete series there (but I would go on Amazon, where you can find it for a lot less). It’s also available to download on iTunes, or by mail from Netflix.
